Key Benefits

  • Rapid set times, from 5 minutes at 20°C, depending on dosage rate
  • Very high early strengths
  • Low shrinkage
  • Ideal for cold weather concreting
  • Moisture tolerant
  • Allows GGBS at 75% cement replacement without compromising early strength development

Typical Applications

  • Precast concrete needing rapid set and high early strength
  • Quick demoulding and increased production in precast
  • Large precast segments where mould numbers are limited
  • Ready mixed concrete for rapid set
  • Cold weather concreting to offset slower winter set times
  • Activating GGBS in combination with OPC in precast elements

What is UKCP Rapid Set?

UKCP Rapid Set is a highly active, early strength enhancing additive designed for use in Portland cement systems. It is based on a novel, synergist blend of inorganic ultra-rapid set accelerators, and it provides reduced set times and extremely high early strengths when used as an additive in OPC systems.

It is supplied as an off white, free flowing powder.

Where is UKCP Rapid Set used?

UKCP Rapid Set has been designed as a potent accelerator where rapid set times and high early strength are needed:

  • Precast concrete, for quick demoulding and increased production, especially where the number of moulds is restricted, as with large precast segments
  • Ready mixed concrete, for rapid set or in cold weather to offset the slower set times experienced in winter
  • GGBS activation, in combination with OPC in precast elements

Activating GGBS

GGBS (ground granulated blast furnace slag) is a by-product of iron making that is widely used as a partial replacement for Portland cement. High amounts of GGBS tend to slow down set times and delay early age strength development, which can cause issues with demoulding and handling within 24 hours of casting.

Used as an activator combined with Portland cement, UKCP Rapid Set allows GGBS to be used at 75% cement replacement without compromising early strength development. Typically, it is used at 5% of total binder content along with 10% OPC and 75% GGBS. Dosage levels can be adjusted to provide the properties you need.

How to use UKCP Rapid Set

Dosage depends on the set times and early strength you need. Typical dosage rates are:

Application Typical dose
Precast concrete 1 to 5% on cement weight
Ultra high early strength precast 10% cement replacement
GGBS activator 5% on total binder weight

UKCP Rapid Set provides very rapid set times at 20°C. Set times can be controlled by adding retarders to give optimum performance.

These figures are typical only. Confirm the dose for your materials and production cycle with trials, and speak to our technical support team for full guidance.

Health and safety

Refer to the UKCP Rapid Set Safety Data Sheet, available on request, for full instructions. Wear suitable PPE, including gloves and goggles, when handling.

Packaging, storage and shelf life

UKCP Rapid Set is supplied in 20kg bags and 1000kg bulk bags. Store it in dry conditions and avoid contact with water. When stored correctly, it has a shelf life of 12 months from date of manufacture.

For semi-dry precast units with high GGBS contents, such as blocks and bricks, also look at Xpress. For rapid set Postmix, see Accelerator A.

UKCP Rapid Set FAQs

Common questions about UKCP Rapid Set. For project specific advice, contact our technical team.

What is UKCP Rapid Set?

UKCP Rapid Set is a highly active, early strength enhancing additive for Portland cement systems. It is based on a synergist blend of inorganic ultra-rapid set accelerators and provides reduced set times and extremely high early strengths when used as an additive in OPC systems.

How does UKCP Rapid Set help precast production?

It allows quick demoulding and increased production, which is especially useful where the number of moulds is restricted, as with large precast segments. A typical dose is 1 to 5% on cement weight. For ultra high early strengths, 10% cement replacement is recommended. Confirm the dose with trials and with our technical team.

Can UKCP Rapid Set be used with GGBS?

Yes. High amounts of GGBS tend to slow set times and delay early strength, causing demoulding and handling issues within 24 hours of casting. Used as an activator with Portland cement, UKCP Rapid Set allows GGBS at 75% cement replacement without compromising early strength development. The typical dose is 5% on total binder weight.

Can UKCP Rapid Set be used in ready mixed concrete?

Yes. It can be used in ready mixed concrete for rapid set, or in cold weather to offset the slower set times experienced in winter.

Can the set time be controlled?

UKCP Rapid Set gives very rapid set times at 20°C. Set times can be controlled by adding retarders. Contact our technical team for full guidance on your mix.
