Key Benefits

  • Rapid set times, from 5 minutes at 20°C, depending on dosage rate
  • Very high early strengths
  • Low shrinkage
  • Ideal for cold weather concreting
  • Moisture tolerant
  • No additional additives needed, unlike HAC and CSA cements in Postmix

Typical Applications

  • Rapid set Postmix products
  • Replacing High Alumina cement (HAC) in Postmix
  • Replacing Calcium Sulfo aluminate (CSA) cements in Postmix
  • Setting posts and fencing
  • Cold weather concreting

What is Accelerator A?

Accelerator A is a rapid set, early strength enhancing additive based on a novel, synergist blend of inorganic ultra-rapid set accelerators. When used as a rapid set accelerator in Portland cement systems, it provides rapid set times and high early strengths.

It is supplied as an off white, free flowing powder for blending into dry Postmix formulations. Postmix is a dry, pre-bagged blend of cement and aggregate that is mixed with water and used to set posts in the ground.

Where is Accelerator A used?

Accelerator A has been designed as a replacement for High Alumina cement (HAC) and Calcium Sulfo aluminate (CSA) cements in Postmix products, where rapid set times are required along with high early strength.

When HAC and CSA cements are used in Postmix, further additives are needed. Accelerator A does not need them. Simply add Accelerator A to the cement and aggregate package to provide rapid set and high early strengths.

Typical uses include:

  • Rapid set Postmix for supporting posts and fencing
  • Cold weather concreting, for which it is ideal
  • Cost effective Postmix formulations with reduced cement contents

How to use Accelerator A

Dosage depends on the properties required, such as a set time between 5 and 10 minutes and enough early strength to support posts and fencing. It also varies with the OPC level in the formulation. Typical dosage rates are:

Cement content of the Postmix Typical Accelerator A dose
OPC below 200kg per tonne 15kg to 30kg per tonne
Cement above 200kg per tonne 20kg to 40kg per tonne

Cost effective Postmix formulations can be achieved with cement contents in the region of 120kg per tonne combined with Accelerator A at around 15kg.

These figures are a starting point only. Confirm the dose for your cement, aggregate and target set time with trials, and speak to our technical support team before going into production.

Health and safety

Refer to the Accelerator A Safety Data Sheet, available on request, for full instructions. Wear suitable PPE, including gloves and goggles, when handling.

Packaging, storage and shelf life

Accelerator A is supplied in 1000kg bulk bags. Store it in dry conditions and avoid contact with water. When stored correctly, it has a shelf life of 12 months from date of manufacture.

Accelerator A or Accelerator PMA?

Both are rapid set, high early strength additives for Postmix. Accelerator PMA is used at different typical dosage rates, so ask our technical team which suits your formulation. For precast and ready mixed concrete, see UKCP Rapid Set.

Accelerator A FAQs

Common questions about Accelerator A. For project specific advice, contact our technical team.

What is Accelerator A?

Accelerator A is a rapid set, early strength enhancing additive based on a synergist blend of inorganic ultra-rapid set accelerators. Used in Portland cement systems, it provides rapid set times and high early strengths, and it has been designed for rapid set Postmix products.

Can Accelerator A replace HAC or CSA cement in Postmix?

Yes. Accelerator A has been designed as a replacement for High Alumina cement (HAC) and Calcium Sulfo aluminate (CSA) cements in Postmix products that need rapid set times and high early strength. Unlike those cements, it does not need further additives. You simply add it to the cement and aggregate package.

How much Accelerator A should I use?

Dosage depends on the OPC content and the properties you need. Typical doses are 15kg to 30kg per tonne of Postmix with OPC contents below 200kg per tonne, and 20kg to 40kg per tonne where cement contents are above 200kg per tonne. Always confirm the dose with trials and with our technical team.

How quickly does Postmix made with Accelerator A set?

Set times start from 5 minutes at 20°C, depending on dosage rate. The dose can be chosen to give set times between 5 and 10 minutes with high early strength to support posts and fencing.

How is Accelerator A supplied and how long does it keep?

Accelerator A is supplied in 1000kg bulk bags. Stored correctly, in dry conditions and away from contact with water, it has a shelf life of 12 months from date of manufacture.
