What is MRA EF?

MRA EF is a maximum concentration, biodegradable mould release agent. It is a blend of natural vegetable oils and naturally occurring polymeric extracts for general site and precast yard use, and it achieves a top quality concrete finish in most situations and with most common mould surfaces.

Release is achieved by forming a physical barrier between the formwork surface and the concrete. Surfactants in MRA EF help to eliminate blowholes and give a clean, uniform and non-stained surface. It is 100% biodegradable and VOC free.

Where is MRA EF used?

MRA EF is suitable for use on all types of formwork in all climatic conditions. Typical uses include:

  • Timber formwork, sealed or unsealed
  • Precast yards and general site work
  • Multi-planed features such as trapezoidal ribs and cone shaped column heads
  • White or standard OPC concrete finishes

The coating is highly resistant to removal by rain showers or foot traffic, which helps when forms are prepared ahead of a pour. Forms may be stripped early when other factors permit, and form cleaning is reduced to a minimum. MRA EF is fully compatible with the later application of silicone or similar surface treatments when used as recommended.

How to use MRA EF

  1. Prepare the formwork and carry out any necessary sealing.
  2. Apply MRA EF thinly by spray, brush or swab before each concrete pour, as near to the time of placing the concrete as practical conditions permit.
  3. Timber and other porous forms that have not been treated with a plastic formwork coating or other suitable sealer should first receive a double coat. Apply the first coat heavily and let it stand for maximum absorption, then apply the second in the normal way.
  4. On vertical forms, remove any excess that gathers at the bottom of the form.

A thin coating typically gives a coverage of 30 to 40m² per litre, depending on surface porosity. Too much release agent can harm the concrete surface finish, so apply MRA EF as recommended for optimum performance and economy. Confirm the right rate with trials and speak to our technical team for advice on your forms.

For health and safety information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet, available on request.

Packaging, storage and shelf life

MRA EF has a shelf life of 12 months in its sealed container. Store it between 5°C and 30°C and protect it from frost and excessive heat. For current pack sizes, please contact UKCP.

MRA EF FAQs

Common questions about MRA EF. For project specific advice, contact our technical team.

How does MRA EF reduce blowholes?

MRA EF forms a physical barrier between the formwork surface and the concrete. Surfactants in the product help to eliminate blowholes and give a clean, uniform and non-stained surface.

What coverage does MRA EF give?

A thin coating typically gives a coverage of 30 to 40m² per litre, depending on surface porosity. Excessive application can harm the concrete finish, so confirm the right rate with trials on your forms and ask our technical team for advice.

Do I need to seal timber forms before using MRA EF?

Timber and other porous forms that have not been treated with a plastic formwork coating or other suitable sealer should first receive a double coat of MRA EF. Apply the first coat heavily and let it stand for maximum absorption before applying the second coat in the normal way.

Is MRA EF compatible with silicone surface treatments?

Yes. MRA EF is fully compatible with the subsequent application of silicone or similar surface treatments when used as recommended.

How should MRA EF be stored?
