Liquid AEA air entraining admixture for mortar from UK Construction Products

Liquid Mortar Admixtures

Liquid AEA

Liquid AEA is a liquid air entraining admixture for mortars, dosed with the mixing water. As an air entrainer, it is designed to stabilise very small air bubbles in the mix, which typically improves workability and cohesion. Results depend on the mix, so trial it with your own materials.

Powder AEA air entraining admixture for dry mix mortar from UK Construction Products

Powder Mortar Admixtures

Powder AEA

Powder AEA is a powder air entraining admixture for mortars, designed to be blended with the dry ingredients of bagged and silo mortars. As an air entrainer, it stabilises very small air bubbles when the mortar is mixed, which typically improves workability, cohesion and freeze thaw durability.

Powder Water Retainer additive for dry mix mortars from UK Construction Products

Powder Mortar Admixtures

Powder Water Retainer

Powder Water Retainer is a water retaining additive for dry mix mortars. Water retainers help fresh mortar hold on to its mixing water, which improves workability, open time and adhesion and reduces the risk of premature drying on absorbent substrates.

UKCP mortar admixtures are additives that improve how mortars, renders and plasters mix, apply and perform. The range covers air entrainment in liquid and powder form, plus a powder water retainer for dry mix mortars. All three can be supplied individually or combined in a bespoke additive package.

What is in the mortar admixtures range?

  • Liquid AEA: a liquid air entraining admixture, added with the gauging water.
  • Powder AEA: a powder air entraining admixture, blended with the dry ingredients.
  • Powder Water Retainer: a water retaining additive for dry mix mortars.

Which mortar admixture do I need?

Product Form What it does Best suited to
Liquid AEA Liquid Entrains small, stable air bubbles for workability, cohesion and freeze thaw durability Site mixed mortars and liquid dosing plants
Powder AEA Powder Entrains small, stable air bubbles for workability, cohesion and freeze thaw durability Dry bagged and silo mortars
Powder Water Retainer Powder Holds mixing water in the mortar for workability, open time and adhesion Dry mix mortars, renders and plasters

Air entrainers and water retainers do different jobs, so many dry mortar formulations use both. Our team can help you find the right balance for your raw materials.

What do air entrainers do?

Air entraining admixtures stabilise very small air bubbles in the fresh mortar. These act like ball bearings between the sand grains, making the mortar smoother and easier to spread, and they reduce bleeding. Once the mortar has hardened, the small voids relieve pressure from freezing water, which improves durability. Read more in What Is an Air Entraining Agent and When Should You Use One?.

What does a water retainer do?

Absorbent substrates, wind and sun all draw water out of fresh mortar. A water retainer slows that loss, keeping the mortar workable for longer, supporting adhesion and giving the cement the water it needs to hydrate. See Why Water Retention Matters in Dry Mix Mortars.

Who are UKCP mortar admixtures for?

  • Dry bagged mortar manufacturers developing or improving products
  • Silo mortar producers
  • Render and plaster manufacturers
  • Contractors and builders merchants looking for technical advice on mortar performance

Bespoke additive packages for mortar manufacturers

UKCP is a solution provider to dry bagged mortar manufacturers and the wider construction industry. We offer a wide range of additives, including powder air entrainers, rapid set accelerators, retarders, water repellents and blends to suit customer needs.

Our in-house development team uses the raw materials from your own production site to develop additive and admixture packages. That removes the need to bring in multiple additives from different suppliers. We source the small addition raw materials, blend them and supply the package in paper sacks or bulk bags, so you simply blend it with the sand, cement and fillers already used on site. Technical support

With over 30 years' technical experience developing additives and admixtures for dry mortars, silo mortars and concrete applications, our technical support team can help with dosage, formulation and trial mixes. Product information is available in our technical datasheets, and you can request a sample to test with your own materials.

Mortar Admixtures FAQs

Answers to common questions about this collection. For advice on a specific mix or project, contact our technical team.

What are mortar admixtures?

Mortar admixtures are materials added in small quantities to mortar to improve its properties. Common examples are air entrainers, which improve workability and freeze thaw durability, and water retainers, which help mortar hold its water on absorbent substrates.

Should I use a liquid or powder air entrainer?

Use Liquid AEA when the admixture is added with the water, such as in site mixing or plants with liquid dosing. Use Powder AEA when it is blended into a dry mix during manufacture, as in dry bagged and silo mortars.

Why add a water retainer to mortar?

A water retainer helps fresh mortar keep its mixing water instead of losing it too quickly to absorbent substrates, wind or sun. That improves workability, open time and adhesion and reduces the risk of premature drying.

Can UKCP combine several mortar additives into one product?

Yes. UKCP develops bespoke black box additive packages using the raw materials from your production site. The blend is supplied in paper sacks or bulk bags, ready to mix with your sand, cement and fillers.
